Orange giant becomes Viking Poseidon
Latest futurstic-looking ship named by Ulstein Werft...

Today, Friday 14th of November yard number 281 by Ulstein Verft is named after the seagod Poseidon. Viking Poseidon is the name and the orange giant is ready for test trials soon after the naming. Viking Poseidon is the first of three vessels to be delivered by Ulstein to Eidesvik Offshore ASA.

In Greek mythology Poseidon was the god of the seas and the rivers, and sailors prayed to him for safe voyages.

Viking Poseidon is Eidesvik's sixth vessel to operate within the subsea sector.

Suits environmentally friendly profile:-
Ulstein Verft is known to be a quality shipyard, and Ulstein Design’s innovative design of ULSTEIN X-BOW® corresponds well with Eidesvik’s environmental profile. Eidesvik has, for many years, been at the forefront with regard to constantly seeking innovative solutions for its newbuilds, and this has had positive effects on the organisation. We like to express this by saying “Innovation is our tradition,” says Eidesvik managing director Jan Fredrik Meling.
Eidesvik has also ordered two seismic vessels of the ULSTEIN SX120 type from Ulstein with delivery in 2010.

Modern construction vessel:-
Viking Poseidon is an ULSTEIN SX121, a large subsea-construction vessel with ULSTEIN X-BOW® design. The vessel is 130 metres long and 25 metres wide with a deck area of approx 1500 m2. She will be fitted out for 106 persons and will amongst other things be equipped with a ROV garage, helideck and a diesel electric propulsion system.

“The construction of this large modern construction vessel is a strengthening of Eidesvik’s investment in the subsea sector. It is important for Eidesvik that this concept provides better safety and comfort for our employees, as well as being economical, with an expected reduction in fuel,” he continues.

"Eidesvik Offshore is an innovative shipowner that is known for adapting new solutions. We are therefore very happy that Eidesvik has chosen vessels with ULSTEIN X-BOW®. Ulstein has great focus on contionous development of vessels for demanding marine operations. Viking Poseidon is an environmentally friendly and future oriented vessel. I believe all of the shipowner, the crew and the clients will have vast pleasure with Viking Poseidon, says Ulstein Group CEO Gunvor Ulstein.

Eidesvik signed a long-term contract with Veolia ES Special Services Inc. (USA) for Viking Poseidon in April 2008. The contract is for eight years with options. The ship will be a base for advanced ROV vehicles that will inspect and repair offshore installations in the Gulf of Mexico.
